Bob Bernhardt

Serra Park’s Little League Baseball diamond is named for Robert (Bob) Owen Bernhardt. For those who had the privilege and pleasure of interacting with Bob and calling him friend, they knew him as an intelligent and dedicated member of our community. If you did not know Bob, the picture above is symbolic of his warm, humorous and positive disposition.

He and his wife, Ellie, were married for almost 5 decades, and made Sunnyvale their home for 44 of those years. They raised two children; a daughter Julie, and son Rob, who started playing Little League at Serra Park in 1970, with his father as his coach. Bob continued to volunteer his time in the Serra program as an umpire and mentor for younger officials until his death in November of 2004.

Expanding his involvement with Little League, in 1977 Bob became a member of California District 44, which governing 14 leagues in Sunnyvale and surrounding cities, as a board member. He served for 25 years as the treasurer, assistant district administrator, tournament scheduler and publicity director, gathering scores and highlights of Tournament of Champions and All-Star games and furnishing that information to local newspapers. Additionally, he was a member of the District’s elite officiating team and was chosen to umpire the Western Region Softball Tournament.

Bob’s wider community involvement included being president of the Homestead Parent-Faculty Association, Fairbrea Swim and SIRS Clubs, as well as participating as an Elder and Lay Leader at two local churches for more than 30 years. He served his country in the United States Navy, retiring after 20 years from the Reserves as a Lt. Commander, and worked for 38 years in the aerospace industry with Philco/Ford/Loral.

The naming of the baseball diamond was a way of paying respect and saying Thank You to Bob for his 34 years of selfless service to Serra Little League. It highlights what one individual can achieve as a volunteer. Moreover, Bob would want his recognition to inspire all of us to greater giving and participation throughout our community.
